Our story
We are two friends from Inis Oírr who wanted to share the true spirit of the Aran Islands with visitors from around the world. The idea for this business grew naturally from one of our many conversations about Currachs, talking about how often visitors asked questions and were curious about island life, and wanted more than a quick stop or a list of landmarks.
Having grown up on Ireland’s smallest Aran Island, we realised that what makes Inis Oírr special isn’t just what you see, but the stories, traditions, and everyday rhythms of life here. We saw an opportunity to create something that would welcome visitors beyond the guidebooks and offer a genuine connection to the island and its people.
What began as a simple idea between friends became a shared passion: to open our island in an authentic way and to help visitors experience Inis Oírr as we know it.
Our mission is to offer visitors a truly immersive journey:
Our Goal
Turasóirí a thabhairt ar thuras fíorúil ina mbíonn siadpáirteach go hiomlán: ag iomramh ar uiscí glana Loch Mór Inis Oírr agus ag foghlaim scileanna praiticiúiltraidisiúnta déanta currach, rud a nascann iad go díreach le croí-oidhreacht Oileáin Árann.
To offer visitors a truly immersive journey: rowing on the clear waters of Loch Mór Inis Oírr and learning hands on the traditional craft of currach-building, connecting them directly with the heart of Aran Islands heritage.
Mission Statement
Taithí láimhe a sholáthar do chuairteoirí inabhfoghlaimíonn siad scileanna déanta currach agus inambíonn siad páirteach in iomramh ar uiscí an Loch Mór Inis Oírr, ag cur le caomhnú oidhreachta beo, ag tacú leis an bpobal áitiúil, agus ag spreagadhturasóireachta inbhuanaithe.
To provide visitors with a hands-on experience where they learn currach-building skills and take part in rowing on the waters of Loch Mór Inis Oírr, while preserving living heritage, supporting the local community, and promoting sustainable tourism.
Meet the Hosts

Born and raised on Inis Oírr, Tomás has a lifelong connection to the sea and to currachs.
From an early age, he learned the traditions of fishing and island life alongside his family. His career has since spanned over two decades in maritime industries, including passenger vessels, commercial shipping, and traditional boatbuilding.
A passionate rower, Tomás has competed at national level and achieved multiple All-Ireland titles. His deep knowledge, experience, and love for the currach are at the heart of this experience.

Mairtín is also a native of Inis Oirr and shares a strong connection to island life, currach heritage, fishing and racing in regattas with a deep appreciation for traditional skills and community history.
Watching and assisting his father from a young age building and repairing many currachs, Mairtín has continued to carry on this skill by still building and repairing currachs to this day.
Growing up Mairtín would have helped family and friends building and repairing the famous stone walls of the Aran Islands, planting and harvesting potatoes using traditional methods. Together with Tomás, he plays an important role in preserving and sharing these traditions with visitors in an engaging and authentic way.

EXCELLENT Based on 7 reviews Posted on Google Sarah BerginTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I contacted Máirtín to ask if we would be able to squeeze in a Currach experience during a one day visit to Inis Oirr, to which he said there would be no problem. From the start he and Tomás were welcoming, engaging, bringing a real personal feel with photos from their family history of using Currachs to their own stories of building and racing Currachs. We were able to get hands on with Currach assembly, which gave a great insight into how the boat builders used their knowledge of the sea and the resources available to them to build something that allowed them to have a way of life on the island. We then got to have a go rowing a currach on the lake, which was alot of fun. Máirtín was full of praise saying we were naturals, but I have a suspicion that he tells everyone that ;) All in all, it was a fun morning, with a unique opportunity to sample island life of old. I'd definitely go again, maybe bring some more friends so we can see how we fare at racing each other on the Currachs!Posted on Google Lilli OpladenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a fantastic time with the Aran Currach experience. Máirtín and Tomás bring the history of the Currach to life through wonderful personal anecdotes and family stories. The row across the water was the highlight of my trip! It was peaceful and stunningly beautiful. This is truly one of the most authentic experiences you can have. I highly recommend taking this boat trip if you want to immerse yourself in Irish heritage. Listening to the locals share stories about history and traditional boat building adds so much depth to the experience. The people are incredibly warm and engaging—I really enjoyed connecting with them and seeing their culture and way of life through their perspective. An unforgettable experience and absolutely worth it!Posted on Google Yentl BeckxTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Posted on Google Julie BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing museum presentation with Máirtin on Inis OírrPosted on Google Chris MinardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had such an incredible time with Tomas and Mairtin. From the moment they welcomed us at the dock they made you feel at home. Their passion for their homeland and its traditions are palpable from the start. Both are extremely knowledgeable about the island as they have both lived and worked there for almost their whole lives. They showed us farming methods for potatoes, including hands on activities of harvesting that is eventually used for fertilizing, as well as their method of creating the potato ridges. We also had the opportunity to build the famous stone walls that are all over the island, including explaining the techniques and the reasons behind them. Included in the tour was a hands-on demonstration and history behind the currach boats. At the end of all of this you have the opportunity to take one of the boats out on the lake! I can’t recommend this enough!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
